Meet Fizz………..a story of a puppy groom

This is Fizz, she’s cute isn’t she!?For those of you that don’t know she is a Cocker Spaniel puppy, they are popular as a family pet. I grew up with a Cocker Spaniel called Freckles he came into my life a week before I was born so I guess you could say I have a soft spot for Cockers.

The reason I wanted to talk to you about this puppy in particular is that she is a perfect example of how to do the right thing for your puppy whether they are a Labrador, Yorkshire Terrier, Shihtzu etc, it doesn’t really matter.

Fizz’s mum came down to Biggleswade and walked into the shop with her to make her appointment, this was great for Fizz as her first experience of a dog grooming salon was fun! We got to give her lots of fuss, she had a little look around and Fizz happily let me cut her nails whilst Mum held her and Fizz thought nothing more about it, her appointment was made and most importantly Fizz got to go home quickly.

Fizz is a typical Cocker Spaniel, they are a gun dog and many people forget what job it is that they are bred to do, work and be very busy out in the field. They are busy busy dogs! This means that they have a bouncy nature and like to be kept occupied, they also love people and like to have a leader that they can look up to and love.

Back to Fizz….. I know that her Mum thought that she would be a very busy, bouncy dog when the time came for her grooming appointment with us, lots of people worry about how their dog will behave once they have left them, now each dog is different but Fizz is lucky her Mum….

Set Her Up For Success! With prior preparation Fizz had an idea of what to expect at the grooming salon and the whole process didn’t worry her at all as you can see…………..

Now every dog is different but what I am trying to say is there are certain things you can do to make your dogs first to the very last groom a positive experience for him and her so I have listed some suggestions below;

1 Don’t leave it too late!

Your puppy needs to find out what being groomed is all about at a young age, from day one touch their paws, around their eyes, it will then become second nature to them and nothing to worry about.

2 Come And Say Hi!

As soon as your puppy has had their first injection pop in and say hello, we will give your puppy a complimentary nail clip, a fuss and show them that there is nothing in Hollywood Dogs to worry them!

3 Grooming Time!

When you brush your puppy at home pop them up on a surface, like a table kitchen worktop with a towel underneath them etc, they will then know that this is ‘grooming time’, if you try brushing your dog on the floor they will think it’s a fun game but you won’t!

If you choose a breed with a high maintenance coat the best thing you can do for them is to get them used to grooming early, your dog can need grooming from anything between 4-12 weeks for the rest of their life and we want that time to be fun for them not torture!

Just to end here is one more picture of Fizz, she has had a puppy trim  a good option as she’s only a baby and we think she looks pretty cute!
